Is it Better to Walk or Bike?

walking or bikingWe all love our youthful self where we are very energetic and vibrant, we can do anything thrown to us. As time goes by we lose some of the extra energetic as our bodies begin to tire which is natural but the rate at which your body begins to tire shouldn’t be at an alarming rate. Most of the times, the causes of our body tiring out is due to our own lifestyles like bad eating habits, inadequate exercises like if your office is on the second floor of your building and you decide to take the lift beats logic as you can just take the stairs and exercise your body a little bit but anyway that is a discussion for another day.

In this article, we are going to discuss walking or biking as between the two which is better. I know some of you may have already jumped to the conclusion that biking is better but hold your horses as you never know may be walking may be better.

Walking and Biking

Both walking and biking target or engages different muscles of your body hence making walking and biking to different exercises. Some people may be at ease with physical feat over the other due the fact that it targets or engages the muscles he or she wants to build or may be it engages the muscle he or she wants to lose fat. Whichever the form of exercise you choose either biking or cycling, make sure, you wear the right gear for the physical feat. If you are cycling, make sure you have a helmet on, gloves on the hands, bright clothes if your cycling at night and also knee pads for your safety. Make sure you also don’t listen to loud music while walking or cycling so that you can hear incoming traffic and other road hazards.

Weight Bearing vs. Non-Weight Bearing

For those who want to lose a lot of fat and calories, walking is the breathe for you as it is a weight bearing physical feat in that it engages more muscles of your body than biking. Biking uses a machine and the machine does some work for more you while walking lacks any machine hence it engages more body muscles making you lose more weight and calories than biking making biking a non-weight bearing physical feat.

Non-weight bearing exercises have less impact on your joints compared to weight bearing exercises hence if you have a knee problem or any problem on the joints of your leg, biking is the breathe for you as walking will engage your joints more causing more pain. If you prefer biking to walking and you want to lose more calories, increase the intensity of your biking so as to burn more calories as biking is a non-weight bearing exercise.

Intensity

Biking on a mountain will burn more calories than biking on a flat terrain. Walking on the same mountain will burn more calories than biking on the same mountain as biking uses a machine that eases the work of climbing the mountain.

Indoors or Out

If you are in a gym and you are using a treadmill, you can increase the incline or speed hence it will eventually increase the intensity of your biking. When stationary biking, you will burn fewer fat and calories, unless you attend a fitness class. In that class, you will likely burn up to a thousand calories or more making the better form of exercise.
